Business From Home
We are living in a time when there are many
reasons to start the work-from-home trend as it is beneficial for your health
and also for your family. You might wonder, "How can you successfully
manage a home office." Here are a few tips on setting up a home office:
1) Place everything where you want to see them
You must set aside a place where all work is
done and you cannot be distracted by anything else, including the television or
other devices. This will help you avoid any distractions and you can get your
tasks done more efficiently.
2) Focus
There will be times that some of my tasks
might take longer than others, but most of the time I have completed them
before the deadline. To make sure the deadlines in your weekly schedule are
met, it is better not to multitask and keep yourself focused on one task at a
time. Set an alarm to remind yourself that you need to finish certain items.
It's great to give yourself a break from work sometimes and do something
productive.
3) Get organized
In addition to having a clear plan, it will
help you stay on track. Divide the long project into small ones and then create
different boards to keep them together. Each board should contain your main
steps and the activities involved in each step. Make a calendar and add each day.
When you finish a day all the tasks the next day can be added to this board.
Create a folder with your projects in it so you don’t forget what the task is
for or what you need to do for that particular task.
4) Prepare material for presentations
For presentations, it's essential to learn a
bunch of slides and handouts or even hire someone to write them. That means
that you always have access to the materials even if you are working from home.
If you are unable to prepare properly because of schoolwork or work, that
shouldn’t affect your ability to communicate with people in person. You may
need a lot of materials for a presentation, but don't worry, you can find
plenty of them online. Also, use these websites for inspiration, such as Canva.
For example, in the video “How to Write A Presentation With Slides", they
talk about how to write a good PowerPoint presentation. They also have tips on
how to put it together well.
5) Don’t think too much
It is very easy to lose track of time and end
up wasting valuable hours doing nothing but wondering what you can do today.
Sooner or later you will start thinking about work and you will spend all your
free time doing irrelevant things, which will lead to procrastination. And if
I'm being honest, I can't say that I have ever been a procrastinator. But that
doesn’t mean that other people won’t be. All the little efforts you make to
avoid getting distracted from work are worth the effort. It doesn’t matter
whether you are watching TV or listening to music. The point is that you need
discipline. Even though some procrastinators do it unconsciously, if you're
going to make time and attention to your every day, you can train yourself to
focus while you are working from home.
You've probably heard a quote like this
"The mind is like a muscle." And now you know why! Now that you know
a lot of reasons why working from home is beneficial, let me tell you a story
that made me rethink the benefits of working from home.
I was invited to dinner by some friends who
were visiting us last week. As soon as we arrived at their place, our hostess
pointed out that the buffet is full before anyone arrives. What if she tells
them that some dishes have started arriving when nobody has eaten yet? She
thought about it and asked her boss to do something. He offered her $50 to sell
unused food so that he could save money on the dish expenses. In no time,
everyone showed up to eat without waiting to be served. Wow! That was amazing!
The whole event reminded me of this old Japanese saying, "What happens in
the kitchen does not happen outside the house". And now I am sure many
people will agree with me.
I think that one of the best advantages of
working from home is you can always leave whenever you like. Once you are
satisfied with what you have done and there is nothing else to ask for, you can
go back to work. Your boss can send emails to you or you can ask him to contact
the remote team to complete his request. All that takes away your
responsibilities of planning your time for working. Then you can relax even
after finishing your work.
It seems difficult to change gears in your
home office once you get used to it. On top of that, you may find it hard to
motivate yourself to devote time to this area if you had enough commitments in
your daily life. Just keep in mind that staying motivated is not impossible.
Remembering the past events when you used to stay late at work at least once or
twice a month can bring a smile to your face. Workplace stress is inevitable,
so here are three ways to handle it.
The first way you can relieve workplace
stress:
Create a relaxed mood you can feel at your
desk. There are several apps to choose from. Some of those options are Calm,
Headspace, and Calm.me, Zentivate, and Sleep Time. Go with whatever suits your
needs best and have a conversation with your colleagues about it. Discuss the
issue together, brainstorm ideas, and discuss solutions. After all, it is
easier to resolve a problem when you share it and have common ground on why the
problem exists. Take this discussion to heart and use it to improve your work
and find new creative approaches to challenges we face in our workplaces.
The second way you can create a relaxing
environment to work in:
Make the room relaxing. Choose a color scheme
that makes you feel comfortable. You can also purchase a wall lamp that matches
your home environment, or try using soft lighting that emits light throughout
the ambiance. Sometimes sitting at the edge of a desk is also helpful,
especially for employees with a high risk of health issues from sitting at
height.
And lastly, turn off unnecessary notifications
right when you open your door. Most of our phones automatically check incoming
calls and messages, so you can prevent interruptions. If your phone alerts you
immediately that you have received a message, you are likely to ignore it and
respond with a text response instead of taking the call. Instead of looking
down at your phone and ignoring the notification, just look at the name of the
sender and wait for it to pop up in your email inbox. Next, reply to it!
